SECRETS OF THE SEA

‘Secrets of the Sea’ combines vibrant and exciting fabrics for Womenswear fashion. Taking inspiration from photographing a combination of eccentric textures and distorted water reflections created from sealife, my designs concentrate on complimenting rich, illuminating colour and pushing textural boundaries.  Using a unique mixture of yarns has enabled engaging and compelling compositions, to influence oceanic qualities. Developing detailed oil pastel drawings has given me relevant information to compose designs, through the intense use of line, shape and unique colour. My personal flare for woven textiles is enthused by fusing unusual yarns and colour blends, both of which have helped to build my collection.

Coastal adventures

The Dorset Coast’s ambiance and atmosphere is something that has continued to stimulate my admiration for nature and its true beauty. I decided to investigate the secrets of the coast; seen through my photographs and it became apparent that I should focus on this theme.

Photographs show the sheer detail of the seaside and I have tried to capture its characteristics through my drawings and through secondary research I’ve explored how artists also do this. Whilst on placement year, I developed an interest into reversible woven fabrics and how different their colour, pattern and finish can look depending on the fabrics’ side. The high level of detail in my drawings and exploring two-sided materials emphasises this.

Personally, colour influences much of my work. I have created colour theory work to show my project development. I was able to capture the intensity and movement of colour through dip-dying my warps. I have not worked closely with wool, but after completing my first warp, I decided to strengthen my yarn knowledge. I enjoyed working with 2/17’s Marl Worsted Wool as it dyed well and the black flecks added the uniqueness coming through drawings.
